Joseph Pilates (1883–1967), the creator of this method, believed that all movement begins at the center and radiates outward.
His work is a comprehensive system designed to organize the body, refine the connection between mind and movement, and develop strength, flexibility, and resilience.
The Method
Pilates is “strength and stretch with control.” - Romana Kryzanowska
Strength begins at the center — the abdominals, glutes, and inner thighs working together to support the body. From this organized center, the limbs lengthen and move with clarity, creating strength and stretch at the same time.
Control is driven by the mind. Joseph Pilates called his method Contrology. The mind directs the body with attention and intention, shaping each movement with precision.
Breath brings the work to life. It fuels movement, supports the center, and creates rhythm and continuity. The exhale deepens engagement, refines control, and connects the mind to the body.
